Pruning a Fuchsia

  1. Prune when you start to see new shoots on the stems (approx. Late July - August)
  2. Garden plants need to be pruned approx. 6 inches (15 cm) above ground level.
  3. Use sharp clean secateurs. We do not want to pass on any diseases from other plants.
  4. Prune fairly severely as fuchsias will not flower on old growth.
  5. A large woody garden fuchsia responds well to pruning with a chainsaw.
  6. To help your fuchsia to flower longer take off branches near the top, but low down and your fuchsia will continue to bush out. Making sure you always leave a set of leaves under your pruning to continue the fresh foliage.
  7. Feed your plants. A fertilizer such as Seasol-Dynamic Lifter or any plant fertilizer will help your fuchsias stay happy.
